Elgin

Discover Elgin, a gem nestled 65km (40 miles) southeast of Cape Town within South Africa’s Western Cape wine region. Embraced by the majestic Hottentots-Holland Mountains and bordered by the South Atlantic Ocean just 12km (7.5 miles) away, Elgin boasts a terroir perfectly suited for aromatic varietals like Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay.

Situated between 250m to 400m (820ft to 1300ft) above sea level, Elgin’s unique geography, coupled with prevailing southerly winds, creates a cool climate ideal for wine cultivation. The refreshing morning mists and moderated temperatures throughout summer contribute to a slower ripening process, resulting in wines of exceptional balance, depth, and complexity.

The undulating landscape of the Elgin Valley offers winegrowers a diverse selection of prime vineyard sites, while the varied soil composition—featuring gravel, sandstone, clay, and weathered shale—adds depth to the region’s terroir.

While Elgin has long been renowned for its apple orchards, its viticultural legacy dates back to Sir Antonie Viljoen, who planted the first commercial vines during his internment in the Boer War. Today, while still a major apple producer, Elgin is gaining recognition as a premier destination for cool-climate winemaking, contributing to South Africa’s flourishing wine industry.
